28 days Uganda birding safaris

Day 1. Mabamba swamp
After an early morning breakfast, you will leave for Mabamba swamp, birding en-route where you’re likely to encounter a number of bird species that include; The Red headed Lovebird, Black headed Oriole, tawny franked Prinia, African marsh Harrier, Black Bishop, Lizard Buzzard, Ruppel’s long tailed Starling, and the Broad billed Roller among others. You reach the swamp and take a canoe ride to the swamp in search for the rear Shoe billed stork. Along with the Shoe bill, you are likely to encounter the orange weavers, Malachite King Fisher, African and Lesser Jacana, Purple Heron, Purple Swamphen, Black Crake, Weyns’s. We latter transfer to Lake Mburo National Park arriving in the late afternoon and enter the Park.

Day 2. Game drive and boat cruise in Lake Mburo National Park
After an early morning breakfast, we go bird watching in search for Emerald-spotted Wood-dove, Short-toed Snake-Eagle,Great Spotted Cuckoo, Double toothed, Red faced, Spot flanked and Crested barbets, African Snipe, Water Thick-knee, White winged Tit, Brown-backed Scrub-robin,Broad-tailed Whydah, Brown Parrot and Coqui Francolin among others. We will bird whole day with our packed lunch, and at 5pm we will have a boat ride to look for the Black-headed, Lesser-masked, Golden-backed, Red-headed and Little Weavers, African Fin foot .

Day 3, 4 & 5. Birding along Lake Mburo to Bwindi & Mubwindi Swamp Ruhija
You will transfer to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park where you will stay for 3 nights while birding day and night. We will look for some of the Albertine Rift endemics and specialties including like the Handsome Francolin, Green broadbill, the Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Archer’s Robbin Chat, Strange Weaver, Grey Cuckoo-shrike, Chetnut-throated, and Mountain masked Apalis, Yellow-streaked, Shelley’s, Red-tailed, Yellow- throated, Mountain and Honeyguide Greenbuls, Rwenzori Batis, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Great Blue, Black-billed and Rwenzori Turaco, Mountain Illadopsis, African Hill-Babbler, Purple-breasted, Regal, Rwenzori Double Collared and Blue-headed Sunbirds.

Day 6,7 & 8. Transfer to Buhoma, North of Bwindi National Park
After breakfast, you will transfer to Buhoma with en-route birding at the neck of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, in search for the Dusky and Cassin’s Grey Flycatcher, Stripe Breasted Tit,Cinnamon-chested, White-throated and Black bee-eater Many coloured Bush-shrike,Cassin’s Hawk Eagle Olive and Western Bronze Naped Ppigeon, White bellied, Red-caped and Blue-shouldered Robin Chat, Bar- tailed Tragon, Red Chested Owlet, Neumann’s and Black-faced Rufous Warbler, White Tailed Flycatcher, Olive Long –tailed Cuckoo, Pale breasted Illadopsis, Red-throated and Fire-crested Alethes, Collared, Yellow-breasted and Black-throated Apalis, Baglafecht, Yellow-mantled, Black-billed and Brown-caped Weavers, Narrow-tailed and Stuhlmann’s Starlings, Rufous-chested Fluff tail, and the Bat Hawk.

Day 9, 10 & 11. Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, you will transfer to the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, (Ishasha) famous for the Brown Chested Lapwing, Violet-backed and Wattled Starling, Garden, Broad-tailed, Brown and Western Banded Snake-Eagles, Black and Black-Shouldered Kite, Black-chested Snake-Eagle, African Marsh, Motagu’s and Pallid Harriers, Black-Belied Bustard, Temminck’s Courser, Levaillant’s, Black-chested, Diederik and Klaas’s Cuckoo, Black and White-browed Coucal, Blue-naped and Specled Mousebird, Rufous-naped and Flappet Lark, Plain-backed and Grassland Pipit, Buff-belied, Wing-snapping and Croacking Cisticola, Fork-tailed Drongo, Grey-caped Warbler, African White-backed, Ruppell’s Griffon and Lappet-faced Vultures,Grey-backed and Common Fiscal, Black-headed and Papyrus Gonolek, Malachite, Woodland and Pied Kingfisher, Pink-back and Great White Pelican,Yellow-billed, African Open-billed, Saddle-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Lesser Flamingo, Curlew Sandpipre, African Skimmer,
Red Headed Bluebill, Benald’s Flycatcher, Red Caped Robin Chat, and Red Tailed Bristal bill. After birding in Maramagambo forest on 11th we then head to Fort portal driving through the Crater Lakes region and drive North wards along the foot hills of Rwenzori Mountain Ranges, these constitute the western Rift Valley and form the boundary between Uganda and Congo.

Day 12 & 13. Fort portal – Semliki National Park
After an early morning breakfast, with our packed lunch, we start driving to Semliki national park for birding whole day along the Kirumya trail of Semliki national park. This is ranked as number 2 in Uganda’s birding hot spots and the forest is home to some of the Congo biome species and we expect to encounter the African Piculet, Lyre-tailed, Spotted and Zenker’s Honeyguide, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Yellow-throated Nicatoer, Long-tailed Hawk, Capuchin Babbler, Icterine Greenbul, Forest Scrub Robin, Nkurengu Rail, Shining-blue and White-bellied Kingfisher, Oberlaender’s Ground Thrush, Red-billed Helmet-shrike, Swamp-palm Bulbul, Orange-tufted Sunbird, White-crested, Red-billed Dwarf, Black Dwarf, Black-casqued Wattled, White-thighed and Piping Hornbills among others.

Day 14: Semliki – Kibale National Park
After breakfast we go back to Semliki national park for final birding, with our packed lunch, we start birding as we look for the Orange-cheeked Waxbill, Pale-fronted, and Chestnut-breasted Nigrofinch, Woodhouse’s Antpecker, Northern Bearded Scrub-Robin, Diederik and Claas’s Cuckoo, Lead-coloured, Cassins and Dusky Blue Flycatcher, Mountain Wagtail, Booted Eagle, Red-thighed Sparrowhawk, Cabanis’s, Toro Olive, Litlle Grey and Xavier’s Greenbul. At 3 pm we will be done with our birding trip in Uganda, This means we will transfer to Kibale national park

Day 15 & 16. Birding in Kibale National Park
Early this morning at 5:30 you will enter the forest to first look for Kibale’s most rare specie “the Green-breasted Pitta”. This forest protects more than 335 bird species recoded and some of the specialities we expect to encounter here include the Green-breasted Pitta, Afep Pigeon, Buff-spotted, Cadinal Woodpecker, White-tailed Ant-thrush, Green-backed Twinspot, White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Grey-winged, Red-caped Robin Chat, African Crowned Eagle, African Broadbill, Lesser, Willcock’s, Thick-billed Honeyguide, Chestnut-winged, Gross- Splendid and Purple-headed Starling, Dark-backed Weaver, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, Red-headed Bluebill, Red-chested Owlet and Scaly Illadopsis.

Day 17. Transfer to Masindi. (Budongo forest)
After breakfast, we transfer to Masindi passing through traditional homesteads and beautiful tea plantations in the rolling hills of Tooro kingdom.
We shall do en-route birding through a duty road to Masindi, with a lunch stop at Kagadi and latter proceed birding as we go to masindi.

Day 18. Birding in the Royal Mile and Busingiro area
You will have an early morning breakfast, carry your packed lunch and drive towards one of “Uganda’s bird watching hot spots” The Royal Mile. This is historically known to be a leisure spot for the traditional King of Bunyoro and that’s where the name Royal Mile came from. Here the forest has been cut back a few metres along the sides of the main trail which makes it a particularly good viewing area in this excellent forest. Here we expect to encounter specialities like the Yellow and Grey Longbills, Green Crombec, Chestnut-caped and Forest Flycatcher, African Shrike. Flycatcher, Spotted Greenbul, Brown-eared Woodpecker, Yellow-browed Camaroptera, Blue-breasted, African Dwarf, Chocolate-backed and Pygmy Kingfisher, Crowned Eagle, Yellow-spotted, Fairy-breasted and Yellow-billed Barbets, and Jameson’s Wattle-eye among others.

Day 19, 20 & 21. Bird Kanio Pabidi and along Paraa road. (MFNP)
After an early morning breakfast, we check out of the hotel start our birding towards Kanio-Pabidi sector of Budongo forest. Some of the specialities that we expect here include the Scaly-breasted, Brown and Puvel”s Illadopsis, Rufous-sided Broadbill, Fire-Crested and Brown-cheted Aleth, Green Hylia, Black-throated and Buff-throated Apalis, Sooty Flycatcher, Collared, Superb and Green Sunbird, Sabine’s and Casin’s Spinetail, Chestnut Wattle-eye and Cameroon Sombre Greenbul among others. We latter drive on to Paraa and check in to service of Red Chilli Rest Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 22. Transfer to Kitgum, birding en-route After breakfast, with our packed lunch, we start birding as we transfer to Kitgum, through Karuma and Gulu. Some of the specialities that we expect to encounter along this route are the Yellow-bellied Hyliota, Yellow-bellied Eramomela, Wood Warbler, Familiar Chat, Nightingale, Pied Wheatear, Northern Brownbul and African Golden Oriole among others. We arrive Kitgum in the evening and check in to the service of Boma Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 23 & 24. Birding in the Naruse valley, Kidepo NP
After breakfast, we start our journey to Kidepo national park driving on a fair grade unpaved road. This normally takes about 3 hours, entering the Park. we will start birding towards Narusi valley searching for specialities that include the Rose-ringed Parakeet, Rufous Chatterer, White-bellied Tit, Mouse-coloured Tit, Amethyst and Shining Sunbird, Slate-coloured Boubou, Northern White-crowned Shrike, White-crested Helmet-shrike, Fan-tailed Raven, Eurasian Golden Oriele, Red-winged, Magpie, Sharpe’s, Superb Starling, Chestnut Sparrow, Yellow-spotted Petronia, Parrot-billed Sparrow, Grey-caped Social-Weaver, Orange-winged, Green-winged Pytilia, Abyssinian Crimsonwing, Eastern Paradise Whydah, White-bellied Canary, Spotted Crake, Yellow-necked Spurfowl, Red-necked and Clapperton’s Francolin among others. We come back to the Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 25. Birding in the Kidepo valley After breakfast we start our game drive towards the Kidepo Valley in search for wildlife that includes the Zebras, Lesser kudu, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Elephant, water buck, warthogs, Ostriches, Abyssinian Roller, Black-breasted and d’Arnaud’s Barbet, Abyssinian Scimitarbill, Lammergeier, Eastern Chanting-Goshawk, Verreaux’s Eagle, Greater and Fox Kestrel, Eleonora’s and Pygmy Falcon, Stone Partridge, Secretary birds.

Day 26. Transfer to Mabira Forest
After your morning breakfast, with all our luggage packed , we will leave Kidepo national park and head east south to one of Uganda’s best kept rain forest Mabira, its quite a long journey thus we have lunch in either Kumi disitrict or Mbale disitrict then continue to Jinja, and then to Mabira forest. we will do birding on our way as we go.

Day 27. Birding in Mabira forest
After breakfast at 6am we will head into the forest trails to look for Forest Wood Hoopoe, Yellow White-eye, Hairy Breasted Barbet, Blockages Shrike, Tambourine Dove, Red-bellied Paradise Flycatcher, African Harrier Hawk, Speckled Tinkerbird, Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white Mannikin, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Superb Sunbird, African Grey Parrot, Jameson’s Wattle-eye, African Shrike-Flycatcher, Red-headed Malimbe, Velvet-mantled Drongo, Black-billed Turaco. we will have our packed lunch with us in the forest as we will have a whole day for birding.

Day 28: Birding in Mabira- transfer to Entebbe
This morning at 6am you will have your breakfast and then head into the forests to look for Speckled Tinker bird, African Shrike-Flycatcher, African Harrier Hawk, Yellow White-eye, Black-billed Turaco, Blockages Shrike, Tambourine Dove, Red-bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Forest Wood Hoopoe, , Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white Mannikin, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Superb Sunbird, African Grey Parrot, Jameson’s Wattle-eye, Red-headed Malimbe, Velvet-mantled Drongo, Hairy Breasted Barbet.
